Coking (metallurgical) coal is used in steel making and thermal (steam) coal is used in power generation. Have a look at this webpage for more details: http://www.homelandenergygroup.com/s/Coal.asp?ReportID=338859&_Title=Comment-on-Coking-Coal-vs-Thermal-Coal

A large part of the world depends on coal for its source of energy and electricity. Coal is a fossil fuel formed from layer upon layer of annual plant remains for millions of years. Thus, it is a type of non-renewable energy source. It is a readily combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock chiefly composed of carbons and hydrocarbons, as well as sulphur, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. The harder forms of coal are regarded as metamorphic rock. Coal is extracted or mined from rock strata in layers or veins known as coal beds either in underground or open pits.

The world’s major coal producers are China, the United States, India, Australia, Russia, etc. Although the U.S. has the most recoverable coal reserves, China is the largest coal producer of them all, generating more than a third of the world’s total coal production. Nevertheless, China is also the largest coal consumer. It uses coal to produce about 70 percent of its electricity requirements, or nearly two trillion kilowatt-hours, per year. China has adequate coal reserves to sustain its economic needs.

Sadly, coal mining in China is the world’s deadliest and has the worst safety record. More than ten people die everyday in the coal pits, and others die prematurely due to dangerous emissions from coal plants. Thus, the government banned coal mines with unacceptable levels of gas danger and capacity, and around 4,000 small mines were to be closed to improve industry safety. China is dominantly using coal pulverisation technology (use of coal powder to make thermal energy), but it is slowly adopting the more advanced and advantageous coal gasification technology (use of coal gas to make gasoline or diesel fuels). It plans to erect a coal gasification plant by 2010.

In the past 50 years, coal has represented the country’s primary energy consumption. It is recognized that coal will, in principle, remain China’s core energy source in the future. All types of coal have been explored, mostly low sulfur, low to medium ash content, and medium to high thermal value.

not to forget that, two top nations on demand for coal are india and china. Apart from their own coal mining, they rely heavily on supplies from Indonesia.

The method of coal blending for power generation have also made them as the primary importers of coal.

China is also one of the nation that explored and conducted mining in the earlier centuries not only by open pit but underground too.

It relies on coal as much as 70% to fullfil its power requirement.

Impact from this activities placed its self in the 20th position of the 30 most polluted cities in the world.

Hope my info helps.

Thanks

Coal Terminals and additional infrastructure are required in the coal supply chain. Coal newsletters and coal prices show developing economies are more likely to increase their investment into & their use of thermal coal & metallurgical coal in coming years because of its affordability and to meet increasing demands for electricity and steel. www.coalportal.com
